SHIUR 1700 Munich Havdalah: Degeneration/Regeneration is the third in a special four-part series for the Jüdisches Leben in Deutschland 1700 initiative, which the SHIUR project is proud to be part of.

Havdalah is the Jewish ritual marking the transition from the sacred utopia of Shabbat to the "regular" weekday of the secular world, with the intention to "upgrade" weekday life to retain the sacred, even in the mundane. How can we bring those rare, fleeting ecstatic and utopian moments experienced in spiritual settings to normal weekday life? Can we reveal the sacred in the profane?

In the dramatic Roman and Greek statue-filled halls of the Glyptothek, the Jewish Sabbath ending ritual of Havdalah is interpreted through an encounter with Greco-Roman mythology and contemporary aesthetics. Featuring a text based discourse and staged musical and voice performances by Ensemble UNO and mezzo-soprano Corinna Scheuerle of compositions by Erwin Schulhoff and Kurt Weill.
